There are many schools that offer Allied Health Programs. I have been very fortunate to have been part of the Georgia Tech Paramedic Program. They have helped me to be a successful Allied Health Care member.

Be sure to support the Paramedic students that are in your community. The Medical Schools need all the support and positive feedback possible. Finally, be a great citizen and become a Paramedic.

The summer time is enjoyed by people of all ages.  But the elderly and the children can suffer some major medical issues during these extremely hot months of summer.  Children love to play and run out side, they get so distracted with their activities that it is easy for them to not drink enough fluids.  On the other hand, the elderly people can become over-heated from working out in the yard.  These are just a few examples of how the young and the old can be effected.

Things we should do for children:  provide them with plenty of water to keep them from becoming dehydrated.  During the heat of the day, it is best to stay inside where it is air-conditioned.  Wear a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen lotion with a high rating.  When around water, always have a life jacket on the child and never leave unattended.

The elderly also need to drink water to help avoid dehydration.  Avoid exposure to the sun during the hottest part of the day(mid-afternoon).  Schedule any outside work either early morning hours and late in the evening.  Stay inside with air conditioned to avoid having a heat stroke.

Proper Hand-washing Technique

Practicing good Hand-washing technique reduces the spread of potentially life-threatening germs and other germs that can cause serious sickness.  Although alcohol ACLS hand based gels can help reducing the spreading of germs, it does not rid the hands of the germs completely.  Some organisms have the ability to live on surfaces for years, and hand washing reduces the number of the organism on the hands.  That is why it is important to wash the hands a complete 15-20 seconds.  Most people think that the hotter they can get the water that it will kill the bacteria.  It is actually the friction of the hands rubbing together that eliminate the germs from the hands and can kill certain bacteria.  Follow the proper technique used by health care professionals every day.

-Turn the water on to the temperature you can tolerate
-Wet the hands and apply an antibacterial soap/cleanser
-Rub the hands together to create friction, including between the fingers and wrists for at least 20 seconds. Clean also under the nails of the hands
-Rinse the hands and let the water run downward
-Dry the hands with paper towels if possible instead of hand towels
-Turn the faucet off with a clean paper towel and Do not let the hands touch the faucet.  Discard the paper towels in the trash.

Remember to ALWAYS wash hands after having a bowel movement.  The stool has E.coli bacteria and proper hand-washing technique will decrease the risk of contaminating surfaces or food.  Stay healthy and safe by practicing important hand-washing technique.

Time is of the essence when a child’s life is compromised.  Respiratory problems are one of the major dangers that children are faced with.  Intervening quickly when a child is in respiratory distress and providing the appropriate treatment may keep them from going into cardiac arrest.  The PALS certification class covers the different types of oxygen devices for the pediatric population.

Children bodies are designed very different than an adult’s body.  The drugs that are administered to children are given based on weight in kilograms and age.  A PALS certification course covers this information in great detail. Get the knowledge that you need to provide life saving interventions to the pediatric population.  When a pediatric patient’s health turns for the worse, it happens very quickly.  Get educated on how to intervene quickly to prevent the child’s health from becoming a life threatening situation.

Everyday emergency room physicians and nurses are faced with the challenge of saving a child in a life threatening situation, some of which could have been prevented.  Parent’s are always trying new things to help keep their child safe.  In the home setting to keep children safe we should never leave a bath tub of water unattended as well as mop buckets filled with water, do not let the children in the kitchen when grease is used for frying or deep frying foods, the grease can splatter and hit the child in the face causing severe burns.  When there is water boiling on the stove try to place the pot on the back burner, and keep the handles turned toward the back of the stove, this prevents the child from reaching up and grabbing the handle and therefore causing the boiling water to splatter over his entire body.  Physicians, Nurses and Paramedics are required to attend a PALS certification class when their job requires them to provide treatment to the children/pediatric population.

Saving a child’s life is one of the most important things to learn to do. Losing a child effects so many people in the family circle. As a health care professional, even if your job does not specify that you need PALS certification, there very well could come a time that knowing what steps to take to save that child will come face to face with you.

It is very gratifying emotionally and professionally to be able to respond to all types of emergencies and provide life saving interventions in a quickly manner. The PALS certification course focuses on advanced care and skills to children, that involves treating cardiac arrest, heart arrhythmia, and respiratory problems. You are given knowledge about medications and when these medications are to be given.
